The Countdown to National Song Competition 2019

The countdown is on for the 2019 September national celebrations. Among the first events is the national song competition which takes place this Saturday at the Civic Centre in Corozal Town. A total of nineteen performers, fourteen adults and five minors, will compete in both the senior and junior categories for the Belize song and carnival song. According to Communications Officer Neil Hall, this year, the committee is looking for quality over quantity. He explains about the judging criteria as well as what can be expected at the live performances.

“The usual which is fanfare and we are looking forward to last year—if you watched on Channel Five because it was rebroadcast—we had carnival groups making their appearances with the artists, we had artists coming out in costumes. We had artists coming out and performing—not singing the song, but performing the song; really going all out and making sure that people had a more immersive experience. This year, we are expecting the same except more. We are also expecting them to have more interaction with the audience; we are expecting from them that calibre of showmanship and of their singing ability and their stage performance to be just so awesome that it is going to be something not to be missed. The prejudging happened when we had the artists submit their songs to the National Song Competition and they were then selected based on originality, sound quality, the instrumental and lyrics; the message also, depending on the Belize song was a very important portion of the judging process. Once they’ve been selected from that which we now have the remaining seven, seven and five juniors, they are now going to be given scores based on the song, the presentation, of course their lyrics. When I say presentation, their stage performance and anything else that they can do to make their song more powerful to the audience and of course to the judges will be something that they get scored on.”

In the senior category for Belize and carnival song, each winner walks away with ten thousand dollars cash, while the winners of the junior competitions will receive three thousand five hundred dollars each.
