Concerns over September Celebrations’ Theme are Clarified

Communications Officer Neil Hall also spoke on a concern that was expressed over the theme selected for this year’s September Celebrations. If you add the words in the chosen theme for 2019: “From Maya Grandeur to Modern Glory, Together Let’s Shape the Belizean Story,” there are twelve and not ten words as announced in the rules of the competition. Here’s how Hall explains the change.

“When a theme is sent in, there is several different things that happen to it, one of which is, it goes sit before a team of people to analyze it and to choose from the many themes that we get. And one of the things they do is they do have the creative responsibility to ensure that it is cohesive and that it is as powerful as possible. And it was the group that sat to deliberate on the winner that actually said this can be made much more powerful by including two words because the original theme did come in with ten, however, just to give it that additional oomph after it had been chosen as the winner—to ensure that it was much more inclusive of the entire Belizean history, not only the Mayas—that the two words were added. It was two small words, like I believe the ‘to’ and ‘the’ and if you really were to go by most word competitions, if you have an ‘a’ ‘to’ or ‘the’ those don’t count as words if you do a word count for many contests.”
