B.B.A. Threatens Strike if Ministry Doesn’t Address Issue

Ewart Metzgen

So, what is the B.B.A. prepared to do to resolve this issue? The members have threatened industrial action.  That means that most major public transportation will not be operating because majority of the big operators are B.B.A. members. Metzgen told us today that as recent as last week, they had a meeting with Ruth Meighan, the C.E.O. of the Ministry of Transport, but it was just more of the same that was already discussed with Minister Castro. So, will the B.B.A. strike?

Ewart Metzgen, Secretary, Belize Bus Association

“For the last four months we have had our operators wanting to do just that. At the B.B.A., we have spoken to our operators; we have been asking them to bear patience let’s see where we are going. These things take a little bit of time. Last week we had a meeting with the C.E.O. of Transport and in that meeting it was basically the same thing we discussed with the Minister. The transport department was supposed to put together a paper to be sent to Cabinet about the same thing and now they are asking us to put this paper together to send to Cabinet. I think that this problem was created by the transport department. Having a nationwide shutdown will create some problems. But then again, as Belizeans we have to stand up somewhere or the other for ourselves. As Belizeans we have sat back for too long and we let things just ride and ride and ride. We complain among ourselves and we do nothing and we get nothing done. I think it is time that we stand up and say Belizean first. If this is a starting point to wake up others to see if by standing together we can get things done, then by all means. We will go back to our members and if they decide that we go on a strike. We have thirty eight registered members and of those thirty eight we have all the large operators are with the B.B.A.  So, if you look at it and it comes to a shut down, it will affect the whole country.”
