Nineteen-year-old Rhea Reyes is lucky to be alive tonight; she survived a traffic accident on Faber’s Road after the car she was driving in was clipped by a towhead before coming to a stop under the trailer. Reyes was exiting the intersection with Rio Grande Crescent, but didn’t see the towhead coming from the George Price Highway heading towards Central American Boulevard. Driver, Phillip Caine says he tried to avoid the impact, but unfortunate hit the left rear portion of the car.

Voice of: Phillip Caine, Towhead Driver

“I mi di come down Faber’s heading to boulevard and I just see this young lady just shoot out of this lane right yah and neva did stop. A bus mi di come di opposite direction and I believe dah that bus ih mi di look pan fi try beat the bus and she shoot out and when she shoot out, I mash breaks. I mi di try noh hit ahn, but I end up di clip ih tail and the vehicle spin and end up underneath my trailer. Nothing noh really happen to the truck; dah just the bumper and the headlight and a portion of the hood. But dah nothing weh can’t be fix. Like for her vehicle—if yo notice—dah only the tail ah di vehicle I clip too. But dah noh much damage.”

“And the front actually ended underneath the trailer.”

Voice of: Phillip Caine

“Yeah because ih spin and then ih knock the sidewalk and that make it spin underneath my truck.”

The accident occurred around 2:45 this afternoon. Within minutes a traffic department mobile arrived on the scene. The mother and other relatives and friends of Reyes were also on the scene where she was later placed in a nearby vehicle and taken away. Immediately following the collision, Caine says he checked to see if driver of the car was injured.

Voice of: Phillip Caine

“When I gone to the vehicle and ask her if ih okay, she di cry to me and tell me she did not see me. Ih say I neva did see you, I neva did see you, sorry. And she was apologizing to me. I just ask her if she was okay and thank God that she neva get hurt. But she just keep on crying and say ih neva see me and thing, but that is about it.  She as a little bit traumatized and thing, but she didn’t really received no injuries.”

Caine was on his way to the Port of Belize Compound. He says that the accident could have been worse if the trailer was loaded.

Voice of: Phillip Caine

“The good thing about it, the trailer noh loaded; ih empty. So that’s why I stop the way I stop.  Much worse, much worse because if I was going any faster—I wasn’t going too fast either—so if I was going faster or the container was loaded, maybe ambulance mi wah hafto deh yah.”
