PM Barrow Comments on F.I.U. Investigation into Sanctuary Belize Scam

In September 2016, the then Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Joy Grant, received an email alerting the F.I.U. of an ongoing investigation into massive violations of our Foreign Exchange Regulations by the principals and developers of the S.R.W.R. real estate project.  While evidence was collected, the F.I.U. determined that the likelihood of a successful criminal prosecution was negligible.  The F.I.U. continued to monitor various persons associated with the matter.  Prime Minister Dean Barrow was asked if he believes the F.I.U.’s investigation was sufficient.

“I don’t know what they did. I am told that the F.I.U. has put out a statement but I haven’t seen it and I don’t know what details they went into. So I can’t comment on that. What I can say is that that was clearly the correct agency to go to. I insist that the Central Bank regulates financial institutions and financial transaction and is suppose to receive complaints about banking practices and that sort of thing. If there was a suggestion that these people operated a scam and that it resulted in money laundering then the F.I.U. is the place to conduct an investigation. But as to the details of the F.I.U.’s investigation I am not aware. I have not seen their statement and so you’d have to pursue that with them.”
