PM Barrow Says Sanctuary Bay Scam is a Civil Matter, Not Criminal Matter

The People’s United Party says that the F.I.U.’s determination to not proceed with criminal charges is bogus.  During a press conference last week, P.U.P. Kareem Musa suggested that charges such as obtaining property by deception could have been proceeded with.  Prime Minister Dean Barrow disagrees.

“But that strikes me, you know I don’t want to be dragged into a situation where it seems that I am holding any kind of brief for these people, people, I repeat, that I never met and never spoke to a day in my life. But how could it have been a matter of obtaining property by deception. I gave the example at the press conference. Look, you can go about the place you can find very many developments where people have paid their monies and the developments are way behind schedule. I am saying to make it simpler.”

“But this is different.”

“No. No. It is different because of scale?  It is different because scale and perhaps the length of time of the delay and I am saying to you that it may well be the truth. That these people…”

“Well the people never got their land.”

On the Phone: Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“…were scamming other Americans. But lord man how then does that amount to obtaining property by deception. The contracts were entered into. These are arrangements of a civil nature and when people don’t comply with their obligations under a contract the remedy is that you sue them in court. Please remember that while these were transactions between Americans and Americans not even the F.T.C. filed criminal charges against these people. The documentation that we say the complaint made which involved Atlantic International Bank Limited and got our jurisdiction involved and therefore got me involve, is not of criminal charge. It is not an allegation of criminal fraud.”
