E.U. Signs Financing Agreement with G.O.B. for Energy Sector

This morning at the office of the Prime Minister in Belize City, a significant financing agreement of thirty-one point nine-six million dollars for the energy sector was signed by the PM and E.U. Ambassador to Belize Malgorzata Wasilewska. The grant is allocated under the Eleventh European Development Fund to assist in the social and economic development of Belize.  The funds will be used for the implementation of a Sustainable Energy Roadmap of Belize which involves providing solar energy mini grids and stand-along systems for rural communities, which are not connected to the national electricity grid. It will also improve capacities and awareness of energy efficiency measures by public and private sector and look at strategic energy planning and modeling.

“This is the biggest part of the overall support of the European Union to Belize under Eleventh EDF. And by signing this today, we actually complete commitment of all the funds for this financial cycle and the agreement will come the legal basis for the implementation, which I hope we can start as quickly as possible. It will look at all aspects of sustainable, renewal energy including what other options Belize has to produce renewable energy for the people of Belize for the benefit of the economy. But it will also bring to Belize the energy efficiency marking on household appliances that we take for granted everywhere and we have the choice to buy that fridge or that washing machine because it is going to cost us less to maintain that. So it will hopefully allow every citizen of Belize to feel the difference and see the difference. We will also be selecting some public buildings for retrofitting for energy efficiency to showcase how beneficial it is. And that will be an interesting conversation—which buildings we will choose—in the course of the project.”

“This is the third in a series of signing ceremonies, all under the rubric of EDF eleven; the eleventh tranche of the European Development Fund funding. The good ambassador—and I like this; I don’t believe in false modesty—was sure to tell me that the E.U. remains Belize’s biggest donor. We are certain of that, are you ambassador. In any case, this is a significant amount of money that is the total allocation under the EDF eleven, twenty-seven million Euros. And as you have heard the funding is divided into different allocations for different sectors and I note that the sectors are divided into health, public finance management, energy—which we are dealing today—and technical support facility.”

Financing agreements were also signed for the Health and Public Finance Management sectors under the Eleventh European Development Fund back on March ninth, 2018.
