Village Council Elections Get Heated in Cayo; P.U.P. Standard Bearer Charged

Round five of the village council elections took place in four districts: Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize and Cayo, where sparks flew among opposing party supporters and candidates.  The People’s United Party is claiming victory, saying that ninety of its candidates were victorious. According to the P.U.P.’s figures, the party won thirteen of the twenty-six participating villages while the U.D.P. was victorious in eleven.  The P.U.P. won in San Antonio Village, Cayo, where things got heated. The P.U.P.’s Standard Bearer Cayo Central, Alex Balona, was caught on camera spitting on a U.D.P. supporter during a heated exchange which police officers had to break up.  The video clearly shows the behavior of Balona and depicts supporters of both parties engaged in a physical confrontation.  According to reports on the ground, the cause of the scuffle came from the U.D.P. camp where a supporter of area representative Rene Montero reportedly hit Balona’s daughter.  This caused the P.U.P. crowd to react, including Balona.  A police report was filed against Balona, leading him to be charged with ‘common assault.’ He is to appear in court on Thursday morning.
