Armed Robbery in Santa Rosa Village Caught on Camera

An armed thief was captured on camera as he held up a store owner in southern Belize.  He got away with thousands of dollars in cash, but soon enough, the long arms of the law caught up with him.  Twenty-six-year-old Rasheem Garnett targeted a store in Santa Rosa, Stann Creek District and held up its owner, Hui Quin Chen, even as customers were inside doing purchases.  Chen was held at gunpoint and handed over the money in fear of her life.  Garnett fled with the loot, but the cops were able to get him pretty quickly. Here is News Five’s Hipolito Novelo.

It was at around eighty-fifteen on Monday night the armed thief strolled into Santa Rosa Mini Mart in the Stann Creek District. Businesswoman, thirty-five-year-old Hui Quin Chen was behind the counter attending to three customers when the robber appeared. The surveillance video is about a minute long and it shows the culprit pointing the gun at Chen while concealing his face with his left arm. The customers try to cautiously and slowly exit the store but he blocks them. He tells Chen to hand over the money which she does. A frightened Chen stuffs a bag with all the cash and gives the thief. He takes it and leaves but not before hitting one of the customers in the head. The thief made off with three thousand dollars in cash and cellular phones. Quick police response led to the arrest of twenty-six-year-old Rasheem Garnett. Investigators say he is the thief and as such have charged him with robbery. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
