From Organizing Peace Treaties to Clamoring for Life Imprisonment

Chester Williams

When grilled about his recent anti-gang approach, ComPol Williams defended the position he took a few years ago in uniting the warring factions.  However, those who continue to wreak havoc, he says, will be dealt with severely.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“What I did then, I stand by and I will still go on to say that if we have any gang member who shows signs of reformation, he must be given the opportunity to reform.  But those, and I have said this before, those gang members who continue to demonstrate that propensity to create havoc in our society, we must deal with them and we must deal with them hard.  That has been my stand and that continues to be my stand. I don’t do interventions anymore, I am too busy for that and the truth is that I don’t want to be in any talk with any persons who are involved in gang or criminal activities.  I will leave that for CYDP.  We have given CYDP additional manpower to be able to deal with interventions, not only in Belize City, but outside of Belize City as well.”
