Curfew Revisited, Parents Will be Held Liable

Chester Williams

So, with the spate of unrelated murders that gripped Belize City on Tuesday evening, Commissioner Williams has decided to, with immediate effect, reinstitute a curfew for children which was met with resistance sometime ago when it was introduced for the first time.  The catch, he says, is that the police department will now be going after their parents.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I am sure you will agree with me that when you look at the three, well two murders and one manslaughter, because as you said the matter with the two young men in front of the cemetery, that was ruled manslaughter by the D.P.P.’s office, and again, it emanated from a fight between two persons.  One who defended himself because he was being forced to be a part of a gang and he had no intent to be a part of that gang and the one with the clothing vendor, again, it is an isolated incident.  And the one with the taxi man, again, another isolated incident.  I am sure that the public would appreciate the fact that they have seen a lot of police activities and the police have had great success in removing firearms and drugs and even arresting and charging criminals. I want to say that we are doing what we can and there is only so much that we can do, and instead of blaming the police we need to begin to look at those persons who raise these monsters and unleash them on the streets.  There needs to be stricter rules when it comes to parenting.  I want to say here that I will give instructions to the officer commanding Belize City or Belize District to reinstitute the curfew.  This time we are not going after the children, we are going after the parents.  So once the child is found on the street after hours, we are going to take the child home and we’ll bring the parent.”
