Opposition Party Defends the Fourth Estate

John Briceño

The allegations made by the Federal Trade Commission against Prime Minister Dean Barrow are so damning that the Prime Minister hired his law firm, Barrow and Williams, to warn that any re-broadcast, re-publication or repeating of F.T.C.’s allegations against him may result in civil action. Musa views the letter as an attack on the fourth estate, describing Barrow’s decision as ironic.

Kareem Musa, Shadow Minister for Legal Affairs, P.U.P.

“There is a reason why the Prime Minister of Belize asked his own law firm to write a letter to shut up the media. Isn’t is so ironic that the same law firm, Barrow and Williams, that is muzzling the media is the one that formed the company known as Sanctuary Bay. The same law firm that prepared legal work for Sanctuary Bay now has the nerve to write a letter to stab our democracy in the back. These are very bold allegations by the F.T.C. and according to the Prime Minister he is not going to sue them. Now if they are issuing defamatory remarks and comments from their investigations about the Prime Minister, and his cronies and his U.D.P. members why is he giving them a break? Why is he doing that? We must ask out self these questions. If all of these things contained in this fifty-page document is bogus, and lies then we have to wonder why settle it. Why settle something that is a pack of lies according to the Prime Minister.”

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“You in the media have a moral responsibility to keep this alive. It seems that the estate is sleeping because you suppose to be aggressively going into this story and do this investigation. Maybe you can do a flash back at the time when you were going after our government. I don’t know if they muzzled you that you are afraid to talk. But you have a moral responsibility to do the investigation or ask the tough questions and don’t let it go until we get to the bottom of the biggest scandal this country has ever had.”
