Ahmadiyya Basketball League Heads North for Copa Cancun 2019

The Ahmadiyya Basketball League is an athletic movement in Belize that has grown exponentially since it was launched a few years ago.  It has proven to be an effective means of bringing young men together and fostering in them a spirit of brotherhood and camaraderie.  Beyond building a solid team, the boys are all talented on the court.  So much so that it is their third outing to Mexico to compete in the Copa Cancun, a tournament that attracts talent from as far away as Colombia, South America.  Today, two teams headed north to participate in the U-17 and U-19 categories, respectively.  Prior to their departure, News Five spoke with the league commissioner, as well as the star point guard on the U-19 selection.

Rodvern Lino

Rodvern Lino, Commissioner, Ahmadiyya Basketball League

“We’ve been invited this year to participate in Copa Cancun, the 2019 edition.  It’s a competition held in Cancun, it attracts teams from all over Mexico and sometimes international teams like Florida and Colombia as well.”

Isani Cayetano

“How has the Ahmadiyya team, the Belizean team, participated in the past and what can we look forward to from the guys this time around?”

Rodvern Lino

“Okay, so the first year we took U-19 and U-17.  We won the U-19 category and came in second in the U-17 and that result was the same for last year.  We did second and first in U-17 and U-19, respectively and this year we’re hoping to bring back gold and gold.”

Xylon Belgrove

Xylon Belgrove, Point Guard, U-19 Team

“It’s the third year I’ve been participating as one of the players on the team.  This feeling is overwhelming because once we get out of the country we are considered stars in Mexico.  We have to play and keep our standards at a high level.”

Isani Cayetano

“How did you decide to get involved in playing basketball and joining the Ahmadiyya League and what has that experience taught you as a young man?”

Xylon Belgrove

“It has taught me patience, for one.  It has taught me much humility and a way of dealing with other people that like no other thing but sports can do.  It has shown me love like my guys right here.  I love them like brothers, even though they are not my blood-related brothers, but they are my brothers at heart.”
