Vendor Murdered in Belize City; Police Don’t Know Why He was Killed

Jose Diaz

A Belize City vendor was shot and killed on Tuesday evening shortly after the shooting of Allyson Major Junior.  Naturalized Belizean Jose Diaz, a clothing vendor, was inside his small shop on Cemetery Road when he was murdered. At this time, police are looking for two persons of interest in connection with this homicide.  Police say that they don’t know why Diaz was killed because nothing appeared to have been taken from the store.  Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more in the following story.

On Tuesday, it was business as usual for fifty-three-year-old Jose Hilario Diaz. The vendor was inside this wooden and zinc structure on Cemetery Road in Belize City where he owns a small clothing and footwear business, when he was killed.  Just around the time Diaz was getting ready to close his shop for the day, when around five-forty or so in the evening, a man walked up, pulled out a gun and fired a single gunshot which caught him in the jaw.  The gunman ran away from the scene and Diaz fell and died on the spot. Police responded to the fatal shooting moments after.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“They saw the motionless body of a male person lying face up with an apparent gunshot wound to the body.  What police gathered so far is that Mr. Diaz was inside his business establishment when he was approached by a male person who fired a single shot at him which caused the above mentioned injury.”

Several police officers and the crime scene personnel descended on the small shop – where grieving family members gathered and tried to console each other following the tragedy on Tuesday evening.  The family says that for the past year and a half or so Diaz has been operating here on Cemetery Road. Police say that this small shop is an extension of the New 2 You business that is located right next door. At the moment police say they have no idea why Diaz was killed.

“Do you know whether or not any words were exchanged between the two?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“No. Up to now, no. We can’t establish whether it was a robbery or another incident, as he still had his belongings on him.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Any security cameras or witnesses in the area that may have seen the shooting?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Police have spoken to several persons and we are looking at different angles at this moment.”
