Police Move Quickly to Defuse Dispute between Warring Groups in Sandhill Village

Ivan Hyde

Police are moving quickly to defuse a feud between two rival groups in Sandhill Village, Belize District.  That feud led to the shooting of Ivan Hyde who was injured while at his home in the village on Tuesday morning.  Hyde was shot multiple times and luckily for the victim, the injuries were not life-threatening. He was released from the K.H.M.H. on Tuesday and investigators are rounding up members of the feuding groups to de-escalate the situation and prevent any retaliation. Superintendent Alejandro Cowo says the feud is over drugs and territory.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“What police gathered so far is that Mr. Hyde was inside his house when he heard the door being opened. He called to find out who it was and shortly thereafter he heard shots being fired. He ran to the back door and the person followed him and fire shots at him causing the injuries to him. Mr. Hyde was treated yesterday and was discharged in the afternoon. We are following several leads that we have been receiving. We know that it is an ongoing dispute that is among two rival groups that are within that area.”

“Sir what steps are being taken if any at this time to possibly defuse this tension between these two groups in Sandhill?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“I know that one of the groups is already in police custody and police is looking for the other set so that police can deal with them. I believe that there will be an intervention among the two groups. However there is a part of the investigation that police will be dealing with the group that is detained at this moment.”

Hipolito Novelo

Supt. Alejandro Cowo
