September Celebrations 2019 Theme Announced

“From Maya Grandeur to Modern Glory, Together Let’s Shape the Belizean Story.”  Get used to hearing and seeing that line because it is the brand new theme for this year’s September Celebrations. The winning theme was selected from a pool of more than two hundred submissions.   In the end, it was Eloy Escalante Senior’s theme that resonated with the selection committee.  Today, NICH and the media travelled to Escalante’s home in Orange Walk to surprise him with the good news. Here’s more from today’s announcement:

“What the committee usually does is to look at the themes and try to come up with something that is in the mood with the country; what our country is doing; the status of country. It is also to promote patriotism, love of country so that our people realize who we are and where we want to go so that we can create some sort of awareness that a person from the public is also trying to do.”

“Well, as you know, this place was inhabited by the Indians. They say the Maya Indians but we have different kinds of Indians. Like they say, all the ruins are Maya. I don’t know if I should say this but I don’t believe it is the Mayas who did that. All these ruins are all buried because of the great flood, the deluge that destroyed the whole earth at the time, biblically, nuh? There are the people who lived a thousand years, like Adam who lived nine hundred and thirty years and in those days they could live almost a thousand years. And these people the intelligence they had and so they built these pyramids that confuse the scientists today but a lot of them don’t believe in God so they don’t look at it biblically. But it was them that did it, not the Mayas. The Mayas we have today didn’t have that intelligence to do that. That is my belief and I always share it.”

Escalante received one thousand dollars for his winning submission.
