Labour Rights Training for BTEC’S Nail Techs and Event Planners

The Belize Center for Employment Training is hosting its summer training programme for nail technicians and event planners.  A component of the summer programme is a session on labour and employment.  Today, we stopped by the session which is being facilitated by a representative of the Ministry of Labour. There, over thirty participants were learning about the rights, responsibilities and expectations of the employee.  Training Facilitator at BTEC, Marceli Richards tells us more.

“This is a job preparedness training that we do here and we feel that it is only right that we inform our participants about the labour laws and the rights they have as workers within the environment. In this component that we are doing, we are hoping that a lot of our participants turn our doing businesses or working from home but that doesn’t mean that they are limited from that information that they should know while they are working in the workforce.  When you get an interview it is not necessarily you taking in the information that the employer is looking for but you also the right to ask questions and negotiate other things such as office hours, as well as salaries. A lot of individuals feel like when you are settling for a job it is kind of you are settling for whatever they are giving you and not realizing that you as a person that has kills has that right to negotiate as well.”
