Joseph Budna Explains Why He Cannot Be Sent Back to Guatemalan Prison

Joseph Budna

Thirty-nine-year-old Joseph Budna is a free man after being released from police custody in Belmopan on Saturday evening.  His release comes after Budna was grabbed on Thursday by a team of officers in Camalote Village after escaping from a Guatemalan prison a few weeks earlier.  In his own detailed defense on Monday, Budna explains why he cannot be expatriated to Guatemala to serve out the remainder of his twenty-five-year sentence for kidnapping.  While the spotlight has been on Budna since his daring escape and release, it is important to note that he was convicted for that crime and that he had escaped from prison once before in 2014.

“You cannot hold me there and then, you need fu ker somebody front ah di court. You have an extradition document then you take this document and show it to the judge and so you have Mr. Budna remanded to the Belize Central Prison on an extradition treaty, you know.  But there is no way you can remand a Belizean, not only Joseph Budna, but in any case if a Belizean comes running back from Guatemala or any country that does not have a treaty.  You could not send this man to Hattieville because you need a committal warrant from a judge to get him to Hattieville, you know.  And you cannot play around the bush and seh yoh wahn grab dis man and put wahn foul play pan ahn and then lock ahn up fi just, you know.  I’m not seeing that from the police department and I applaud the team that got me on Thursday and took me although dehn mi have to haul out dehn gun and thing like that, yoh undastand, but they were protecting themselves because dehn neva know if I armed or anything.  They acted very professionally.”
