Beach Volleyball Athletes Bring home Bronze Medal

With all the crime affecting the City, there is some good news tonight. Two beach volleyball athletes were victorious over the weekend and came home with the bronze medal and trophy from the twelfth Central American under-twenty-one Beach Volleyball Championship, which was held on the sand courts of Campo Marte in Guatemala City. Francis Hauze and Michael Jenkins took third place in the pairs, while Nicaragua captured the top two spots in the regional competition.  Jaylen Manzanero, Anselmo Rivero, Mya Musa and Ayah Safa from team Belize also represented the Jewel in the tournament. The team returned on Monday and News Five caught up with Hauze and Jenkins at the P.G.I.A.

“It’s our second time for our age and the third time for an actual international beach event. The first time it was a U-19 tournament we came in fifth so we knew that this time we would go. We train hard, we knew we could have come in first but we came in third. It is better than nothing; we tried our best and brought home a trophy and medals to the country.”

“The preparation was very hard because we have the Cuban coach with us. We practice in the evening three to five. We do gym at eleven o’clock and then we have two practices on Saturday and one on Sunday. Sometimes we do the bodyweights at the Marion Jones.”

Michael Jenkins

“In the group we weren’t really worried about anyone because we knew we could have beat all of them in the group stage. Because we played by groups then move on for the finals. In our group we won all our games and we lost one set to Costa Rica and we won the game in three. But overall we know we could have beaten all the teams. Some of the games were close; some of the games went over 21 because a game only goes to 21. Some f the games went 25-23, 24-22. Tiring games but we stuck through and did our best.”

Francis Hauze

“In beach volleyball sometimes the sand is over your ankles and when you jump you dive, you run, you play for a ball it’s very tiring. The first play you will do is very tiring.”
