Lower Half of a Young Man’s Body is Discovered in River Behind Sand Hill; is it Doren Grinage?

Doren Grinage

The family of a missing minor made a shocking discovery this morning. A body was fished out of the Belize River in the area of Sand Hill and the Grinage family believes it to be sixteen-year-old Doren Grinage who was last heard from almost a week ago, on Tuesday.  The Grinage’s had conducted searches in the general area of Sand Hill and headed to the river this morning when they discovered the lower half of a body.  While they have identified it be Doren’s, the police are moving cautiously and will do DNA testing to determine the identity. Doren is the nephew of Minister Edmond Castro. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

He was reported missing by his father five days ago, on July eleventh, 2019; last seen wearing a red t-shirt and a camouflage short cargo pants. Since then, family and friends formed a search party that combed Sand Hill Village and neighbouring communities seeking Doren Grinage. The land searches came up empty and so today, the family took to the river and in an interesting and shocking revelation, the search team would come across what appears to be the body of the young male floating in the water.

“We start search from since. We had a search party who was out. I am thankful and grateful for everybody that come out and help support the search. We never had any idea where to look so we just comb all the bushes and everywhere, the river side, everything. This morning, my husband get a boat to comb the river when he found part of his body floating.”

The police were immediately called to the area, which was accessed through the dirt road that leads to the Belize Water Services Treatment Plant. It is to the riverbank in the area that family members and the police investigators gathered, but before long realized that it was only the lower half of a body that was discovered, dressed in only boxers.

“We alert the police and said that they found the body. But when the forensic come, they realise that it wasn’t the entire body; it’s just part. So we are waiting on the coastguard to come and do some search, dive or something to see if they could come up with the rest of the body.”

“What you believe happened to your son?”

Voice of: Denise Grinage

“I don’t know. I wish I know. But at this point in time, I am just grateful and thank God that we can come to some kind of closure that we don’t have to continue look the entire country for my son. I am just grateful that we find him and we could make a closure. I am just hoping and pray that we can hold the rest of his remains before night with the help of coastguard because we don’t have professional divers.”

But was the person murdered before his body was dumped in the river. It is uncertain at this time whether the body was severed in an act of cruelty or if a crocodile may have ripped off the upper half. Police say that samples were taken for DNA testing to determine whether in fact they are those of Doren Grinage.

The family, however, believes that the remains are that of their loved one. In an off-camera interview with News Five on the riverbank, Denise Grinage says that they had just returned from their annual family trip, which Doren attended. To her knowledge, he did not have conflict with anyone.
