Fixed Sentence for Patrick Reyes, Guilty of Double Murder

Patrick Reyes

After months awaiting a fixed sentence, today Patrick Reyes, who is in his late fifties, learnt that he will have to spend forty years of a life sentence with the possibility of parole only after serving his entire jail term.  Reyes was handed down the sentence this morning before the Chief Justice. The Teakettle man was convicted of the double murder of husband and wife, Evelyn and Wayne Garbutt, which occurred in April of 1997.   Allegations are that Wayne Garbutt allegedly asked permission to use a stripe of public land in order to gain access into his property and Reyes had an issue with that.  On the day of the incident, Reyes hurried home, pulled out his shotgun and fired shots injuring an employee of Garbutt. He then turned the shotgun on Garbutt and his wife. Garbutt died on the spot, while his wife was rushed to the hospital but succumbed later that same day.   Reyes was charged with double murder and upon trial, convicted and sentenced to death.
