Yanira Novelo was Strangled to Death

Yanira Novelo

The official result of a post-mortem has been released by the Police Department in the murder of Yanira Novelo in Orange Walk. It shows that the young mother had a horrible death as she was manually strangled by her killer. But according to police, Novelo also had multiple cut wounds to the chest area. The body of the twenty-four-year-old was discovered by police in a cane field off the San Lorenzo Road in Orange Walk on Tuesday morning.  Her four-year-old son, who was with her as she ran errands in anticipation of his birthday party, was hospitalized for injuries to the chest. The young boy was found walking on the road by a farmer, who stopped to render assistance, and it was later realized that his mother was missing.  Today, police revealed that, contrary to what has been said, robbery does not appear to have been the motive.

“Reports suggest that the deceased may have come into possession of a substantial amount of money prior to her death. Is it believed that robbery is the motive in this particular homicide?”

Joseph Myvett

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“At this point in time, I will not be able to say that other than to say that certain leads were given to us which we followed, including that she visited a financial institution. And we have exhausted that lead and that proved to be that that was not the case. She did visit, but she did not receive any monies from there.”

Duane Moody

“That’s what I wanted to get to sir. What is the investigation showing as the motive of the crime?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“At this point in time, we are still trying to establish a motive. We are following several leads. We believe she was taken to that area in a vehicle which we are looking at as one of those leads at this point in time.”

Duane Moody

“Is it believed that this was a calculated attack on this woman? That more than one persons were involved? What is the investigation showing?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“[Umm] at this point in time, the police did get that information that it was more than one persons. We have followed that as well and at this point in time, I will not be able to release the answer to say that “Yes that is the case or it was not the case.”
