Prime Minister Defends Barrow and Williams Law Firm

In the document filed by the F.T.C., the Prime Minister’s law firm and his partner, Rodwell Williams, are named.  Aside from suggesting that the Prime Minister owns a piece of land in Sanctuary Bay, which Barrow has flatly denied, the document speaks to two lots owned by Williams.  It also highlighted that Barrow and Williams represented Sanctuary Bay.  The law firm has also been retained by the receiver, approved by the U.S. court in Maryland.  Barrow says that if Barrow and Williams had done anything irregular and improper, the court would have not approved the appointment.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“If the suggestion is that in acting as an attorney Rodwell and Barrow and Williams did anything in the least bit improper how is it that the court in Maryland which was the one hearing the actual complaints, the case against A.I.B.L. and the other defendants, how is it that that court appointed a receiver to take charge of Sanctuary Bay and its assets in Belize? And that that receiver with the approval of the court retained Barrow and Williams to act on behalf of the receiver who in terms is acting on behalf of the victims. It doesn’t make sense. If any Barrow and Williams would have done anything the slightest irregular or improper there is no way they would have become, in effect, the court appointed lawyers for the victims, for the receiver who in fact has custody of this matter for the victims.”

“There was one claim in there, that tour partner owns two lots in Sanctuary Bay. No concern as to what perception that may be?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“No I didn’t. I don’t know what sort or perception that could give rise too. If he bought two lots, I hope that all he did and he didn’t pay like the people in the States for any kind of construction and that sort of thing. I don’t think it is material and I say that seriously. I am saying that the firm operating as lawyers must clearly stay on the right side of the rules governing of the profession and on the right side of the law. I repeat, if there had been any irregularity in the representation of Barrow and Williams of the defendant in the defamation suit or in preparing incorporation papers, there is no way the U.S. court in Maryland would have agreed to Barrow and Williams being retained as the lawyers to represent the receiver and the victims of the scam. That is it. Punto Final.”
