Letter from B.T.L. Chairman to FinSec – “an outrageous lie”

Kareem Musa

At a press conference held by the People’s United Party last Wednesday, Area Representative Kareem Musa attested to the existence of a letter in which the chairman of B.T.L.’s Board of Directors is purportedly requesting a tax waiver from the Financial Secretary.  According to Musa, who is the Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Communications and Public Utilities, proof of the letter was verified by two credible sources.  Today, when we asked the Prime Minister to comment on the letter, he wrote it off as an outrageous lie.  For context, we will show you what Musa said a week ago and the PM’s response to that question.

“Belizeans business people are subject to arrest but when B.T.L. is alleged to have committed worse violation of the law then there is nothing to see, nothing going on and not a penny owed. This is a blatant cover up. According to very reliable sources inside the GST department, there exists a letter from the Chairman of the Board of Directors, asking the Financial Secretary for a waiver or a write for the payment of these outstanding taxes. Let me just say this, this has been confirmed from two very reliable sources. If this is true, once again a very serious allegation.”

“As the Minister of Finance, are you aware of any communication between Chairman Nestor Vasquez and the FinSec in respect of a waiver of the taxes?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Were you the ones who said that, because when I read it somewhere I was astounded.  That is absolutely, you know what I can’t say about the FTC I can say about whoever said that.  That is an outrageous lie, there is no… How could the people ask for a waiver of taxes that they say they don’t owe.  That is an absolute, contemptible lie.”
