From Death Row to 25 Years Behind Bars for Convicted Murderer, Erlin White

Erlin White

From death row to life sentence to possibility of parole, after he completes twenty-five years behind bars. That’s how the murder case concluded today for convicted prisoner, Erlin White, when he was given a fixed sentence for killing a well-known Belize City businessman. The sentence was handed down this morning by Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin.  White was first convicted of the murder of Dwayne Arnold, seventeen years ago and sentenced to death row,  but won an appeal and was given a life sentence. Today, while the life sentence was affirmed, the C.J. ruled that White has the possibility of parole after he serves twenty-five years. He has already served seventeen years and now has eight more years behind bars to apply for parole. Prosecutor in the case for the D.P.P.’s office was Porsha Staine Ferguson, while White was represented by attorney Leslie Mendez.   On February eleventh, 2012, Arnold, the owner of Electrical Zone Rebuilders, was gunned down inside his store. White walked into the store, asked for Arnold and shot him dead. He was arraigned in February of 2002 and convicted in October 2003 and sentenced to death by hanging.  Attorney Twist later appealed the conviction which was upheld by the Court of Appeal. The case went all the way to the Privy Council in London which subsequently reduced White’s death sentence to life in prison.  Now he has a chance at parole.
