Caliz remanded for Committing Sexual Assault

A sixty-four-year-old San Pedro man is on remand for committing a sexual assault upon a nine-year-old boy. He is Ernesto Caliz, a self-employed resident of the island.   Late on Monday, Caliz, who was unrepresented, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Trapp. The prosecutor, Corporal Roman Andrews of San Pedro, objected to bail being granted to Caliz on several grounds. He submitted that the court should consider the tender age of the minor, and that this is not the first time that such allegations have been made against Caliz even though he had not been convicted before. He also says that the young child may be left traumatized after the alleged sexual act.   Caliz is also known to the child. While the prosecutor had heavy objection to bail, Magistrate Trapp rejected those objections and offered bail to Caliz with stringent conditions. He was unable to meet bail of eight thousand dollars plus two sureties of four thousand dollars each and was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until September twelfth, 2019.
