A Bullet Grazes a Pregnant Woman When Gunfire Erupts Outside of her Residence

A pregnant woman is the latest victim of gun violence. Thirty-one year old Kanchi Casey was at home in bed with her common-law-husband when a bullet penetrated the wall of her house and injuring her on the lower back. Casey may not have been the intended target of the shooting and luckily for her and her unborn child, she has been spared. A family dispute just outside of her house triggered the shooting. Casey spoke to News Five’s Isani Cayetano about the frightening incident.

An expecting mother is lucky to have escaped grave injury on Friday night when her home came under gunfire from an unknown assailant.  The elevated wooden structure shared by thirty-one-year-old Kanchi Casey and her common-law husband was assaulted while the couple was in bed.  A single round tore through the plywood wall, splintered a wooden table inside the residence and grazed Casey’s lower back.  Had she been in another position while sleeping, the injury could have been mortal.

“On Friday, July fifth, just after eleven p.m., police visited Neal Pen Road where they observed a female by the name of Kanchi Casey, thirty-one years old, with an apparent gunshot wound to the right upper shoulder.  She was inside of her residence when she heard a gunshot and then she realized that she had received such injuries.”

But why would anyone attack Casey’s home in the manner in which they did?  According to the shooting victim who is five months pregnant, she has no issues with anyone and cannot think of a reason why a gunman would target her home.  Police, on the other hand, told the media earlier today that there was a misunderstanding prior to the shot being fired.

“What we understand is that she was along with her common-law husband inside of the house, but apparently there was a dispute among other family members outside of the residence which had probably led to [the shooting].”

Reporter

“Okay, so did the dispute involve their people or neighbors?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“It was their family members along with other neighbors.”

Reporter

“Now have you all determined who had a firearm since you know the source of the dispute?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, we are looking at that investigation.  We have detained two persons that police are questioning at this moment.”

Can it be that the gunshot may not have been intended for the occupants of the house and that the shooter may have been out to get one of the individuals involved in the dispute?

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Well we believe that it was not for her, it was for the person who had the argument just before the incident occurred. This is something that the police are investigating at this moment.”

Reporter

“Okay, but was it a licensed firearm?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“As I mentioned, it is alleged that it is an argument amongst relatives and other persons that were in the immediate area.”

In the wake of the shooting, Kanchi Casey and her common-law husband have decided to relocate from the property.  She has been released from the K.H.M.H., while police continue to investigate the incident. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
