K.H.M.H.A. Cannot “Legally Pay Pension”

Reports emerging from within the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital say that staff members are up in arms after they were told that the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority cannot legally pay pension.  The staff learnt of this situation by way of an international memo dated June twenty-eighth. The memo was issued after the authority engaged in a process of clarifying its pension obligations.  It says that after further consultation and legal clarification of both the K.H.M.H.A. Act and Pensions Act, the authority informs that pension payments are only payable by the government.  The memo asserts that pension is paid to “public officers” on retirement from public service.  According to the memo, persons hired independently by the authority would not fall within the persons entitled to a pension.  And this is what is causing the uproar at the K.H.M.H. because those who were hired many years ago were of the thinking that they were working as public officers and expected to collect pension upon retirement.  But that, according to the K.H.M.H.A. will not be the case. The K.H.M.H.A. will be paying employee benefits which would be payable via the hospital’s Provident Fund which was established in 2017.  We attempted to contact the C.E.O. Michelle Cox-Hoare, but all our attempts to get comment were unsuccessful.  We did get in contact with the C.E.O. in the Ministry of Public Service, Doctor Peter Allen, for clarification.  He told News Five that he is not aware of the specific issue. We were told that the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Workers’ Union is to discuss the issue this evening.
