Rochus Schreiber Breaks Silence on B.T.L.’s G.S.T. Woes

B.T.L.’s tax dilemma is very much a topic of interest, despite the company’s position that it is up to speed with its monthly G.S.T. payments.  Since we broke the story of the purported twenty-nine million-dollar debt owed by the telecoms provider in general sales tax, there has been public outcry, including open criticism by the People’s United Party for the company’s alleged failure to keep up with its obligation.  Many have weighed in on the matter, except for outgoing Chief Executive Officer Rochus Schreiber under whose tenure as head of the company the issue has come to light.  Schreiber, who assumed leadership of the utility company in 2017, has tendered his notice of resignation amid the debacle and had not spoken openly on the situation.  That was until Thursday night when News Five caught up with him at an event hosted by the company.  While the outgoing C.E.O. was circumspect in his response, he admitted that B.T.L.’s tax woes go back to 2010.

“Are you at liberty, sir, to speak on the situation in respect of B.T.L. and the GST arrears situation?  Where does the company stand on that?”

Rochus Schreiber

“The company already made public announcements regarding the GST, so that has already been addressed.  There have been additional statements made by the tax authorities and various parties in the public sphere, so this is a well-documented and well discussed subject that has already been vetted in the public.”

Isani Cayetano

“However, this scenario, if I may, is playing out under your leadership of the company.  Is it something that has taken place over a number of years and is only now reaching a high point, so to speak, or is this something that perhaps took root while you were at the helm of the company?”

Rochus Schreiber

“The matter has been well documented and as far as I can see from the statement and the spreadsheets which have been circulated, this goes back a number of years.  I started with the company in 2017, April 2017 and this goes, the statements are being circulated which go back to 2010 or 2011.  So it’s a digging out of matter which has been there, if it was there, for a long time.  But as you can see from the statement that was released by our company and by the tax authorities, the company is paying its tax obligations on a regular basis.”

Isani Cayetano

“Under your stewardship of the company was there any action taken to address this problem prior to it reaching a head?”

Rochus Schreiber

“At this point we are not aware what the problem is, as you can see from the statements that we have released we are complying with the statements and the requests from the tax authorities.”
