Will There Be Justice for Felix Brothers Murders?

Maurice & Emory Felix

The killer of the Felix brothers remains on the loose tonight. Maurice and Emory Felix, well known street figures, were gunned down on Wednesday night at a club on Baymen Avenue, Belize City. The duo was inside the pool room when they were executed. The siblings were no strangers to the law and had been released from prison in January of this year. But given their violent past, their mother contends that it was only a matter of time and that the brothers were marked for death. Going into the weekend, there is apprehension that the execution of the notorious siblings may unleash retaliation.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The murders of her two remaining sons was presaged by Janet Felix several years ago.  While she may have felt that omen ever since they were released from prison on January twenty-first of this year, the grieving mother could not predict when the inevitable would have taken place.  Because of that, she was resigned to fate.

“Dehn seh di two ah dehn dehn wahn dead together, because from dehn small ah cyant keep dehn from one another.  Dehn talk wid one another, dehn eat wid one another, dehn go da school, right so dehn go. Dehn keep together.”

Now that her worst fears have come to pass, Felix does not believe that the family will have an opportunity for closure following the executions of Maurice and Emory.  What she has done is embraced reality and hopes that other mothers whose sons are into gang and gun violence would do the same.

“If all mothers woulda come out and talk di way ah how I talk, I bet yo this thing woulda done.  But dehn fraid.  But I get tired of it…  Ah got wahn grandson ya, he go dah E.P. Yorke, ah fraid dehn staat pan he.”

Isani Cayetano

“It would seem as if though your family, the Felix family is marked for death.”

Janet Felix

“Targeted and nothing becomes of it, nothing no become of it.  Nothing, nothing, so I noh di look out fu… Ah yer dehn gone and dehn pick up di whole ah di people dehn bout di place, but I noh di look out fi nothing become of it.”

Again, it is a cynicism that most families of murder victims have subscribed to, a stinging indictment of the police department’s inability to make arrests and solve crimes.

“We are getting information that we believe will assist us in this investigation at this moment.”

“If I’m not mistaken, the victims are from south side Belize City.  Is it believed that they may have been followed over to that particular area where they were gunned down?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Well, we know that after their release from, or after they managed to secure bail from the court, I know that they were residing in different areas of Belize City.  We do not have an exact address whether to state if they were from south side or from north side, but we know that they were within Belize City.”

Like Janet Felix, it was not lost on the police department that the Felix brothers were likely targets given their criminal past.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We have been following several information that we had received prior to this murder and yes, we knew that based on what they were detained for, previously at prison and of what had transpired several years ago that they could have been a possible target.”

Reporter

“Do authorities foresee any kind of retaliation for the murder of these two men?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, we believe that there might be possibilities but police are presently engaged in several operations within the areas that we expect that something might come out from.”
