2 Belize City Men Are Arrested: Residents Allege Police Brutality

Chilling video images of the police pepper spraying a pair of men in the south side of the Belize City have been circulating on social media.  The video shows police using unnecessary force to restrain the men as spectators watched from the sidelines.  It is known that police are cracking down on suspicious individuals due to the crime wave, but the reason for the apprehension of the men is not known. Here is News Five’s Hipolito Novelo.

Hipolito Novelo, Reporting

A crowd began gathering in front of the Mahogany Street Police sub-precinct in the south side after a group of officers was seen arresting two men. The men, we are told were in a car and were stopped at the police checkpoint but tensions quickly rose during the arrest.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“They had an altercation, a back and forth. One of the police pushed the guy and you know they responded back the started punching them and then pepper spray them.”

Cell phone video of the incident shows at least six law enforcement officers arresting two men and escorting them into the Mahogany Sub precinct. The eyewitness alleges that officers hit and spit on the men and used excessive pepper spray in the process.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“They used excessive force. It was about five to six police officer. I don’t think they had to do that.”

Hipolito Novelo

“What did they do?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“Beating them, pepper spraying them, spitting in their face.”

Hipolito Novelo

“They spit in their face?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“Yes, behind the police vehicle but I think it is one of them that did that though.  They beat them, took them into the station, beat them so bad that even they had to run out of the station.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Because of the pepper spray?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“Yes. You can see the fumes coming out of the windows.”

We were informed that the men were taken to the Queen Street Police Station.  Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
