CARIFESTA Draws Near; is Belize Prepared?

The Caribbean Festival of Arts is held biennially across member CARICOM states and this year, the event will be held in Trinidad and Tobago. Hundreds of persons in the creative and performing arts will converge to showcase the best of the best in areas of fashion, visual arts, dance, music and the like. The event is set to begin on August sixteenth, but there has been little movement in Belize in terms of getting the delegation ready for the regional festival that is quickly approaching. While Director of the Institute of Creative Arts stopped short of explaining who will represent us, Greg Vernon did confirm that there is a delay and that the organization is working on putting all the pieces together.

“What we are looking at is the visual arts. What they have limited us to is ten pieces of art for the national gallery at CARIFESTA. We are looking at fashion designs; we are looking at two designers going out at this time—seeing if we can get them prepared, get them ready. Of course you know in sourcing material, sourcing designs are very pricy so we are seeing what we can do with that. We are also looking at the youth orchestra from the Caribbean. We have one person that has auditioned; we are waiting to see if he has been accepted. And we also have the performing arts that will be going.  We’re also looking at the film and the good part about the film is that three films have already been accepted by audition to the film festival within the CARIFESTA. We sent out six films and three made it into the finals so we are very proud of that. And we are also seeing if we will be able to work with the same Jankunu Productionz in getting them out. They are willing to pay some of their way in going to CARIFESTA. And so we are looking at that to see if we will be able to ker a good tight contingent to the CARIFESTA.”
