Brothers Maurice & Emory Felix are Assassinated inside Belize City Nightclub

Maurice & Emory Felix

Early on Wednesday night, two notorious siblings were shot to death on the north side of the city far from their home in the Port Loyola community. The duo, Maurice and Emory Felix, was released from prison in January of this year and they were to check in with the police twice weekly, including Wednesdays; they did and were killed sometime thereafter.  The brothers were taken by surprise inside the pool room of a nightclub on Baymen Avenue where it is believed that they were with a third person. A gunman walked up and opened fire, Maurice was the first to expire.  Emory fled the room reportedly jumped from the verandah and unto the street. The gunman caught up with him just outside the club and emptied his weapon. A first responder says he observed Emory hemorrhaging when he took his last breath. A total of thirty expended shells were recovered from the scene. Tonight, police are on high alert in the event that the executions will unleash further bloodshed. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports on the murders of the dreaded Felix brothers.

Will a spate of reprisals succeed the most recent gangland executions in Belize City?  Tonight, police have ramped up their presence in certain neighborhoods in anticipation of an eventuality, following the Wednesday night murders of a pair of well-known siblings.  Brothers Maurice and Emory Felix rose to notoriety for numerous brushes with the law, including a stint on pretrial detention for the murder of Mark Gentle, as well as an attempt on his mother’s life back in May 2015.

After spending three years and eight months in prison, both men were released on bail with the condition that they report to the Queen Street Police Station to sign in twice a week.  Janet Felix was at home on Sanker Street when her daughter informed her of the deadly shooting.

“I mi deh pan my bed di lay down.  My daughter, di one weh da teacher come from eena ih room and ih come and ih seh, “Ma, yo haftu get up and put on yo clothes, change yo clothes.”  Ih seh, “because dehn bwai dehn get shot up and ih noh sound good.”

The Felix brothers were inside this establishment on Baymen Avenue after reportedly checking in at Precinct One sometime earlier in the evening.  They were caught flatfooted by a lone gunman who entered the premises, walked up a flight of stairs and carried out a hit on the siblings.

“Last night at about 6:45 p.m., police responded to shots being fired at Baymen Avenue.  As a result they visited a business establishment where on the street side police observed Emory Vincent Felix, a thirty-three-year-old Belizean, with apparent gunshot wounds to his body.  Upon police making inspections inside of the business establishment on the second floor, they observed the body of Maurice Cardinal Felix, a thirty-four-year-old Belizean, also with apparent gunshot wounds to his body.”

Upon learning of the incident, Janet Felix rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital only to discover that the bodies of her sons were still being processed at the scene of the shooting.  She describes what happened next.

“So ah get wahn vehicle weh mi deh right deh soh and dehn ker mi out deh.  Dehn ker mi out deh and dat dah when ah meet Emy pan di ground.  Dat da how ah meet mi son pan di ground.  Di next one mi deh upstairs.  Dehn seh he mi di play pool, dat da di undastanding weh ah get.  And di undastanding weh ah get is that dehn neva mi deh up deh long.  They weren’t up there a long time because people talked to them, people talked to them and di people weh talk to them, dehn tell yo weh time dehn talk to them.”

According to investigators, the pair was inside Sky Deck Bar and Grill where Maurice was playing a game of billiards.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“What police gathered so far is that both male persons were inside of the establishment playing pool when persons entered the establishment and fired several shots at their direction causing the abovementioned injuries to them.”

The scene where the shootings took place was littered with spent shells.  On the ground where Emory Felix lay motionless, Scenes of Crime personnel retrieved thirteen expended shells.  Upstairs of the building, another seventeen expended shells were recovered from where his older brother was fatally shot.

“Di only thing weh ah noh get fi know who actually shoot my son.”

Isani Cayetano

“Was this something, because of the lifestyle of your sons, was this something that you as a parent were expecting?  Did you see this coming that your sons would have been targeted in this kind of manner?”

Janet Felix

“All I mi want da my sons dehn, me and dehn, dehn could go long with me da church, cause if we noh deh eena St. John’s Church wi deh eena Bethany Baptist Church.  Dat da mi fu we living, Sunday time.  If yoh noh di eena St. John’s Church yoh deh eena Bethany Baptist Church.  But ah couldn’t get dehn back eena church because dehn seh if da even eena di church dehn gwein go kill dehn.”

Admittedly, the writings were on the wall for the Felix brothers who were a long way from home when death came knocking.  The mother saw the hit coming but could not say when it would take place and often found herself in suspense, until the ominous message was delivered.

Janet Felix

“Dehn thing ya staat from one charge to the ‘nother charge cause yoh know dehn di eena, every time dehn di get charge.  I call dehn, how to say it, representatives ah murda case.  Dat da how I call dehn, representa, because dehn noh do di murda buut dehn arrest dehn.  Then when yoh listen dehn kill di person weh do di murda out ya, then when dehn come out di heat is out here.  Dat da how fi dehn life because Maurice get charged fi Michael Skeet.  Ih get charged fi somebody else and somebody else and this case weh ih deh pan fu Mark Vernon, that da mi wahn winning case representing murderers.  Dat da how fi dehn life go.”

Curlin “Cluck Cluck” Felix

With the murders of Maurice and Emory, Janet Felix has since lost all three of her sons to gun violence.  Her eldest son Curlin “Cluck Cluck” Felix was also shot and killed in September 2007 in an ongoing gang feud.  Of note is that these Felix brothers are part of a larger family of murder victims related to deceased social activist Therese Felix whose children have also been gunned down in Port Loyola.
