Kareem Musa: “We can no longer trust the financials of that company anymore”

According to the P.U.P.’s Kareem Musa, the government has been silent on the matter because the pile of documents which indicates B.T.L.’s true financial standing, is a huge political blow to the Barrow administration. Musa pointed out that after acquiring the company for more than half a billion dollars, B.T.L. invested tens of millions of dollars in 4G and fiber network. He says that this brings into question B.T.L.’s financial stability and records.

“The BTL issue is a huge UDP deception because they have always celebrated what a great investment BTL is for the people of Belize. Yet what we saw in the settlement agreement is that we overpaid for BTL as the Party Leader rightly pointed out some five hundred and fifty seventy million dollars. Central Bank had to put some twenty million dollars. Social Security Board, the people’s money eighty five million dollars. When we think about Social Security let us remember that we have a glaring instance of conflict of interest because the very chairman of the BTL board also sits as chairman of the Social Security Investment Committee. That is Mr. Nestor Vasquez. So that is a conflict of interest to be investing the people’s money from Social Security into BTL. Also on both board we have who served as a member, the Prime Minister’s son Anwar Barrow sat on board of these boards. So we must always bare that in mind when we think of the people’s money being invested into BTL. What we have learnt that BTL owes GST in the millions upon millions of dollars over the period of years completely undetected and undisclosed by the auditors of the company we begin to wonder what else is being covered up, what else is wrong with BTL. We can no longer trust the financials of that company anymore.”
