PUP’s Kareem Musa Tells GOB to Tackle Poverty to Address Crime

The New York Daily News is reporting that the recent murder of American doctor, Gary Swank, is deterring tourists from traveling to Belize. In fact, the head of the Belize Hotel Association Ted Tejeda today noted the cancellations following the murder.  Dr. Swank was fatally shot along with San Pedro Tour guide Mario Graniel while they were on a skiff, fly-fishing about a mile west of the island. The death of Doctor Swank prompted Cabinet ministers to urgently meet and discuss the matter. Several crime-fighting strategies will be put in place to assure locals and visitors of their safety on the island. Caribbean Shores Area Representative, Kareem Musa, reminded the government of the need to address the root cause of crime.

“No doubt crime is one of the top priority issues. It is a national issue. It is not a political issue. Crime does not only affect the PUPs, UDPs, or independent parties. We have always extended an olive branch to the government for us to come up with a national plan to address crime in this country. No doubt there is a lot of alarm on the island San Pedro and rightfully so because the loss of one American life can spiral out of country and affect their entire livelihood on the island a we fully appreciate. But we want to urge the police department to place emphasize on all murders for all Belizeans because all Belizeans live matter. While they are out there in San Pedro focusing on that, let us also increase the number of boots on the ground and all these band aid policies all across the country. But at the end of the day, to answer your question on crime Hipolito, crime is just a symptom. The real issue is poverty and this government has failed to address poverty in this country.”

No has been charged for the double murder.
