Belize’s Football Coaches Participate in FIFA’s Grassroots Training

A train the trainer’s course is taking place at the F.F.B. Headquarters in Belmopan. Twenty-two coaches from across the country are engaged in a FIFA-certified grassroots training being facilitated by expert, Stanley Gardiner. The one-week intense course is looking at theoretical and practical approaches to teaching the fundamentals of football for children between the ages of six and twelve years. A News Five crew checked in with the F.F.B. and spoke with Gardiner and F.F.B.’s technical director Philip Marin about how the course is expected to improve the future of the sport in Belize.

“This course is very important to the federation and to all of our coaches who are working with kids six to twelve years old. The purpose of this course is to educate these coaches so they can learn the concept of grassroots football so that they can understand how to train children at the lower level, understand how to organize grassroots festivals, understand how to organize tournaments and also to go back and train the other coaches within their region.”

“We have been talking a lot about the problem of over coaching the kids. We want to emphasize on let the game be the best teacher. We have been working on the importance of making the kids practice the proper number of players on the field. V-11 is not exactly the best idea to work with kids in the first stages and so we are trying to emphasize on that and hopefully it will bring good results using this methodology by itself.”

“He’s covering topics like the philosophy of coaching, methodology of coaching, how to create a training session for grassroots. He is also looking at the role of a coach educator. On Friday, we will be having a grassroots festival that will cater for a hundred and twenty kids. And practically, he is focusing on the fundamentals. On the basics of football: how to pass, how to dribble, but he is emphasizing that at this level, it is for the kids to have fun. It is for them to enjoy the game and let the game be the best teacher for them.”
