Additional Officers Deployed to San Pedro for Crime Fighting Efforts

The double murder of Mario Graniel and Doctor Gary Swank prompted the National Security Council of Belize to call an emergency meeting. The Security Council, which is chaired by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, has agreed to some immediate measures that will later be expanded. Additional officers have been deployed to the island and according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster, operations on the island this past weekend has led to officers seizing a cache of firearms and drugs on the island.

Edward Broaster, Deputy Commissioner (Operations)

“We have deployed additional officers to San Pedro in an effort to interdict some of the criminal elements on that island. Over the weekend we have seized two firearms and a number of individuals were arrested and a number of drugs have been confiscated as well. We will continue that operations on the island. There will be additional support in terms of officers being placed on the island to ensure that we try best as possible to mitigate any criminal act that may affect the economy of the island or the citizenry of that island as well.”

“The police department is quick to pullout those resources to solve these crime but the same urgency is not given to other murders of other citizens of the country. What do you say to that?”

Edward Broaster

“That is not true and you all can attest to the fact that we have had local murders where the Commissioner if Police had expended all resources and efforts to investigate those murders. I can specifically talk about the triple murder in Hattieville and the Swallow Caye Five. We have a lot of resources being expended to investigate those murders. We are also not like ostrich with the head in the sand because we are aware that the repercussions will come from the Swallow Caye five may have within the city and we are preparing to ensure that does not occur. So I would that that is nonsense.”
