Volleyball Team Needs Your Support!

Allan Sharp

Last year, the senior Volleyball team also won the silver medal at the Central American Championships held in Belize City. This time around, the U-23 girls secured second place once again. And while we celebrate these wins at home, Volleyball Association says it is a costly to manage the teams and have them operate at their optimum levels. Today we caught up with a very proud President of the Volleyball Association who says that the sport needs the public’s support, especially with funding. Allan Sharp weighs in on the team’s performance and tells us how you can contribute. Over the next week the team needs to decide if they can go to Puerto Rico in October of this year for the Continental Championship. Here’s more from President Allan Sharp.

Allan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association

“We are extremely happy. I was jumping for joy because the girls went and did an excellent job. I think the experience of the girls, the hard training and the coaches did an excellent job. The girls came through. I think Costa Rica and Honduras really got away; otherwise we could have made it a clean sweep.   Two main things happened obviously in the first match had they been able to pull that through it would have been a major difference. And Costa Rica – the second set was 31-29. We had already won the first set and winning the second set I think would have definitely meant that we would have won that match and would have made the gold medal right there.  I think the main area where everybody can support is that we need to increase our base. To increase our base, we need more coaches, more people at the administrative level. We need more people willing to take on leadership roles in working with the team. A lot of it is voluntary so we need a lot more volunteers who are prepared to take on teams, learn how to coach, learn how to administer teams and learn how to administer clubs. Obviously, finance plays a major role because we raise a tremendous amount of money by hard work every year. We need to come up with systems in place when we have successful programs that continue to build on that success needs more and more people but it needs more and more finance.   I think the games in Puerto Rico would be an excellent opportunity because it would raise the level of experience, the level of their own expectations. So, I think it is an excellent opportunity because that would boost, in a complete way, the way they believe in themselves and in sports.  I would like to say that right now we are going from international tournament to international tournament. Our U-21 Beach leaves next week. Our U-20 which is actually U-18 females leaves the following week to compete – that’s an indoor [competition]. We host the Central American Beach Volleyball Championships August 16-18th and then we still have three more international teams going away this year. So, there is a lot happening and we need all the support we can get.”
