Belize Goes to U-23 C.A Female Volleyball Championship

The U23 Female Volleyball National Team departed Belize today for the fourth Central American U23 Female Volleyball Championship in Managua, Nicaragua. All seven Central American Countries will be participating. The games start on the twenty-third and end on the twenty-ninth. Belize’s team is made up of twelve players, three coaches and one referee. Today, we spoke with Coach Jose Fontes and Team Captain Shericka Burton.

“It is a high level competition. We prepared for this for about four months, mostly because the school schedule was conflicting with the training. The most important thing is that it has been a good partnership between the athletes and coaches. So, we expect a good performance in this Central American Championships because this is with the team that got second place last year in the Central American Champions. At this time, this U-23 team has some of our best players who have trained in this four year cycle. We do have some athletes who no longer study in Belize but we believe that headline players are players who served as alternates last year and this time they will be main players for the team  like Melanie, Fatima and Mya. And we are counting on the captain who is charismatic and competitive. One of the objectives is that the team is competitive and enjoys the game.”

“Well, actually for this competition we have been practicing since last year because it was supposed to happen last year but it didn’t because of some difficulties in Nicaragua. So, they have moved it to this year and we are prepared. We have been sacrificing a lot, so most of the girls had to like study for exam and try to balance it off between exams, school, final projects and exam practice twice a day. I feel like we are more than ready. We have made a lot of sacrifices so it is now or never.  Everyone out there is coming for Belize because of the last tournament that was held last year and most of them didn’t want to pick us firs to play.   I hope everyone supports us and watch the live stream. We want to make you proud and so we want to try and bring back gold this time, guys.”

The team returns on June thirtieth. For the full schedule and live stream of the matches, check out the “Belize Volleyball” page on Facebook.
