Did Guatemalan Minor Attempt to Flee Accident Scene?

Gabriella Corales

Eight-year-old Gabriella “Gaby” Corales will be laid to rest on Friday. The standard-two student of Our Lady of Guadalupe RC School in Belmopan was knocked down and killed on Tuesday afternoon, as she rode her bicycle over a pedestrian ramp a few yards away from school. The little girl was on her way home when she was struck by a grey Toyota land cruiser. Behind the wheel was a fifteen-year-old Guatemalan boy. Besides being charged with manslaughter by negligence, the teen is also facing charges of causing death by careless conduct, driving unlicensed motor vehicle, driving vehicles without third party risk insurance and driving without valid driver’s permit. He was offered bail of ten thousand dollars, plus two sureties. His bail conditions include surrendering all travel documents.  Today at the bi-weekly police press brief, Superintendent Hilberto Romero fielded questions from reporters.

“Can you say how that minor got the vehicle?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero, Acting O.C., Crimes Investigation Branch

“That issue is under investigation at this time. We have only charged so far the fifteen year old minor. Part of that investigation is ongoing right now.”

Reporter

“Can it lead to a point where his parents can be charted with anything?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Well that is a possibility. Again the investigation will reveal, we are looking for further evidence. Whoever needs to be charged will be charged?”

Reporter

“Sir has police looked at any surveillance footage of the area?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Yes. We have conducted an investigation, conducted several interviews and checked the area for surveillance footage.”

Reporter

“Are you able to clarify because there are discrepancies whether fifteen year old had tried to flee the scene or render aid to the little girl?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Well at some point he stopped right after the pedestrian ramp, a couple yards after the pedestrian ramp. So the vehicle came to a stop there and that is when people came around and the driver remained there with the vehicle.”
