A New Driver’s License is Coming Our Way

Belize is preparing for the introduction of a new driver’s license system.  With financial and technical assistance from the Taiwanese government, a new driver’s license will be created and it is the intention of the Ministry of Transport that the card will be recognized as an official Belizean document anywhere in the world.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano Reports.

The Transport Department has been working closely with its Taiwanese counterparts to improve the management of traffic along Belize’s many thoroughfares.  In achieving efficiency in administering the movement of vehicles, a new driver’s license will be created, one that will be recognized as an official identification card worldwide.  Today, the National Belize Driver’s License took center stage at a handing over ceremony for the Motor Project Contribution.  Tirso Galvez is the Chief Transport Officer.

“We have issued or printed over twelve thousand driver’s license cards so far.  Before that was in place we were still issuing the laminated driver’s license which as we all know that people were having trouble when they were traveling with this document into other countries.  And so now, we are proud to say that we have this driver’s license card… and that is not all to the card because we still intend to have a National Belize Driver’s License which will be for the entire country of Belize.  So, as you all know, several of the municipalities or all the municipalities basically are printing their own format of the driver’s license and we have already gotten approval from Cabinet in respect to the approval of the National Belize Driver’s License so at the end of the project we will see one standardized Belize driver’s license for the country of Belize.”

According to Transport Minister Edmond Castro, the idea of a new driver’s license system is to allow motorists to be able to drive anywhere in the world with a card that it recognized as legitimate.

“The Transportation Master Plan, we are happy that Taiwan was able to play such a significant part in developing Belize’s infrastructure as it relates to the national driver’s license system.  No longer our people will be embarrassed by traversing in other parts of the world with a driver’s license that can be manufactured by a fourth grade student, any fourth grade student nowadays.  The registration of motor vehicles, there again our system was very loose, not one of the best but because Taiwan was able to facilitate us and bring us world-class status with technology, we will be able to track motor vehicles entering into the country with proper identification whether they elude authorities or customs and did not pay or whether they pay their fair share at the ports of entry and we now that those vehicles are legally tracked, registered here in this country.”

Taiwanese Ambassador Remus Li-Kuo Chen spoke about the improvement of administrative services using an e-governance platform.

“This project is a four-year joint partnership of Taiwan and Belize, e-governance with a budget of two point eight million U.S. dollars.  The goal is to provide a time-saving and less costly e-government services and transport for Belize citizens.  I am honored to announce that the abovementioned goal has been so successfully achieved.  We have established not only the Motor Vehicle Service platform which is a centralized database as the minister explained very well.  I cannot do better than what he has just done.  And then, with all these transportation data being used, it will be integrated but it will also improve your transport services to all Belizean people.”
