Julius Espat: Auditor General Expresses Frustration

Julius Espat

Espat, who has been at the helm of the Public Accounts Committee for the past seven years, says that there is an obvious lack of accountability in the manner in which government spends the people’s money, a point that the auditor-general points out in her report.

Julius Espat, Chair, Public Accounts Committee

“The auditor general in her report expresses her frustration.  She goes to the point as to continuously reminding the Belizean people that the Public Accounts Committee needs to be restructured and she does it in a very diplomatic way.  I appreciate just the mere fact that she mentions it and people have to understand that we have a country that’s going close to four billion dollars in debt.  We have an administration that doesn’t show how they are functioning.  Anywhere in the world, anywhere in the democratic world, any corporation, any business that cannot show you how they are spending the money or how efficiently they are managing your money is going into a deep hole and that’s where we are. When you vote a government in, they are in charge of setting policy and it is difficult for you to expect change after eleven years.  They have been in power for eleven years.  This has been going on over and over again.  I have been the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee since 2012.  We have made it, I have done everything I can to be able to ventilate the issue so that people can understand the severity of the problem and government continues to ignore the efforts being made and it’s not a political effort.  It is something that is worrying us.”
