S.S.B.’s Pension Scheme and “Alternative Lifestyle”

Between 2017 and 2018, more than two thousand contributors joined the social security fund. Currently, the fund consists of about one hundred and eight thousand contributors. Every year, close to one thousand, three hundred persons retire and begin to collect their pension. In such cases where the employee dies before reaching retirement age, their pension is paid out to their beneficiaries, such as their spouses or children. But according to Doctor Young, the S.S.B. has received letters from several different groups regarding “alternative lifestyle.” While same-sex couples exist, the law does not recognize their union and as such their pension cannot be paid to their significant other. During Tuesday’s press briefing, Doctor Young was asked about it.

“The pension regulations are quite clear that it goes to a surviving spouse and it defines that as a man or a woman in the law. We have had a number of letters of inquiries from various groups who believe that that is unfair. As you put it that you have a lifestyle that is not recognized but the law but we are unable to go outside of the law to pay those particular payments.”
