P.U.P. and S.S.B. Officials Met to Discuss Contribution Reform

Douglas Singh

And finally, the P.U.P. says that the S.S.B.’s directorate has failed miserably and must be held accountable.  The party calls on the government to immediately desist from playing politics, but Singh reminded the P.U.P. of the 2003 protests that resulted in the increase of contributions.

Douglas Singh, Chairman, Social Security Board

“What the release did not say is that we also offered advice to the People’s United Party. Just about a year ago we met, the Executive of the People’s United Party including the leader the Honorable John Briceño at their office at Charter House on the Philip Goldson Highway. We did the same presentation to advise them of the level of where SSB was, of the investment, future risks that existed and the need for the adjustment. I point out to the team that in fact the Government makes a decision not to implement this because there is a huge outcry against it and that the Opposition is making a lot of noise that it compounds the problem because at the time of elections 2020 the situation would have worsened and the bitter pill would have to be a larger butter pill. If the P.U.P. is successful in taking government at that time it would be their responsibility to make these kinds of adjustments. And they should be remind of 2003 and all the protests that were as a result of the increases that we made in 2003 when they did not do the proper consultation and they went ahead and do some substantial increases. If they were wise and this is what I said to them, you would not make too much noise about this because this could end up being your harness, your yoke to bear.”
