Village Councils Dissolved for Upcoming Elections

Douglas Singh

Over the course of the next six weeks, one hundred and ninety villages will elect new councils. Village council elections are scheduled to commence on Sunday, June twenty-third.  More than one thousand, three hundred seats will be available across the country.  During the last village council elections, the United Democratic Party captured sixty percent of the seat while the remaining seats were captured by the P.U.P. and independent candidates. The first round of voting starts this weekend and according to the Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, Douglas Singh the dissolution of villages has begun.

“There has been the dissolution. Statutorily since the council is dissolved seven days before the elections officially. There is a transition thing where some of the people who actually do the administration stay in doing that administration until a new council takes over. That has already been published. The notification of the election date has to be twenty one days ahead of time. That has also been published. There have been a couple of changes like Independence where we made a recent change. Theirs and Placencia were originally slated for the day of lobster fest and of course they said that is not going to happen. They have asked us to change that so we pushed that back a week. These things do happen. We had a situation with cane season, and so on and so you try to set these things that are most convenient for the villages.”
