Transparency and the Road to the I.C.J.

John Briceño

Belize’s notification to the International Court of Justice puts in motion procedures agreed in the 2008 Special Agreement. Within one year, Guatemala will submit its claim after which Belize will respond a year after Guatemala has filed its claim. It is expected that the entire process will span over several years until a verdict is arrived at by the judges of the I.C.J.  In an interview conducted today, Opposition Leader John Briceño told News Five that due to the nature of such matter, it is highly important to keep Belizeans abreast during every stage of the process and case.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“As soon as I got the results of the referendum and we saw that the people are going to vote yes about going to the I.C.J.  I immediately told my colleagues that it is not the U.D.P. going to the I.C.J., it is not the P.U.P., and it is Belize. I made it very clear to everyone in my party, we have to participate and we have to make sure that we work with the government to ensure that we put the best case possible. The Prime Minister has been in touch with me several times over this issue and I made it very clear to him that we are going to work, we are going to participate with them. So far he has kept his word. We have set up a bipartisan committee of four of which we have named Eamon Courtenay, he is going to be our lead in that committee along with Leslie Mendez, a young attorney. They have been participated in all the meetings. They have been meeting with both co-agents Alexis Rosado and Assad Shoman. We are going to do everything possible, we have to make sure that when we go there we have to win and protect every single square inch of this country. From our end as a party we are going to keep our people inform, the public inform, whatever information that we believe that is necessary to know, we are prepared to make it know.”
