P.U.P. Leader Says Andre Vega Should Return the $400K

Andre Vega

Last week, Andre Vega, son of former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, appeared in court for a civil trial initiated by the Government of Belize.  The government is attempting to recover four hundred thousand dollars which was paid to Vega as land compensation.  The land in question is located along mile four of the Philip Goldson Highway, near the Haulover Bridge. Vega reportedly bought it from Hilmar Alamilla for fifteen thousand dollars on December thirtieth, 2013.  The system, however, produced a duplication of titles for the same piece of land which then led to Vega being heavily compensation.  After public outcry, G.O.B. set out to recover the monies and the case is now before Supreme Court Justice Courtenay Abel.  His attorney Estevan Perrera says that the settlement agreement is perfectly legal and should be honored by G.O.B.  But the prosecution is saying that Vega ought to have known that the land was privately owned and is asking the court to void the agreement and deem it unenforceable.  Today, Opposition Leader John Briceño weighed in on the matter.

“I think Andre should be ashamed of himself. I think he should give back the money. He knows under what conditions he got this. Also let’s not forget Sharon Pitts. She also needs to return the four hundred thousand dollars. Just to imagine the brazenness of this people that they feel this sense of entitlement that my father was the Deputy Prime Minister; my father was the Minister of Natural Resources and because of that I got this money and I suppose to keep it. He needs to return the people’s money. Belizeans are demanding that Andre Vega and Sharon Pitts return the money back to government.”
