Manslaughter Case Commences in Death of Hilbert Sotz

Hallett King

The trial of Corporal Leonard Nunez and Police Constable Hallett King, charged for manslaughter in the death of eighteen-year-old Hilbert Sotz, commenced today in the courtroom of Justice Collin Williams.  Both officers were initially charged with murder following the death of the Caye Caulker resident while in police custody.  Hilbert Sotz was detained on the island on the morning of June eighth, 2015 in connection with a burglary.  He was reportedly in the company of his father when the officers arrived at the family home in Bahia Puesto del Sol and took him into custody.

Later that evening, police returned to the residence to inform Sotz’s parents that he had died of breathing problems at the Caye Caulker Police Station.  Leonard Nunez and Hallett King were held and charged for murder.  On the instruction of the Director of Public Prosecution, those charges were subsequently downgraded.  The King and Nunez are being tried before a jury of eight women and one man and are being represented by attorneys Herbert Panton and Oscar Selgado, respectively.  The prosecutor in the case is Crown Counsel Porsha Staine-Ferguson.  The matter has been adjourned to Thursday.
