OJ Elrington Comments on Belama Residents’ Protest

U.D.P. Standard Bearer Orson ‘OJ’ Elrington, who was involved in negotiations at the early stage, says that residents refused to take Chang’s proposals. According to Elrington, Chang was willing to lease the property to the Belizeans at a cost of one dollar a month for three years.

“Initially I think the settlement had asked for a hundred dollars a month for those who wished to reside on the property. Subsequently to that, they went even lower and said that they would offer it for a dollar a month just to regularize the legal status of those who were there. So that the tenants would have signed and the persons who are there right now would have had he legal right to be there if they simply had signed on to the lease agreement. Sadly enough as you know Francis Fonseca felt it more important to play partisan political games and play with the lives of these very people rather than coming to a solution for these people. I think what was the biggest problem in the initial phase was that the vast majority of the persons who reside on the property are not Belizeans. The owner of the property was making it a condition of the agreement that you had to be a Belizean to enter into an agreement with them. The owners who by the way are Belizeans and therefore it is for them to decide if they will enter into the agreement.”

“Who?”

“The owners.”

Orson ‘OJ’ Elrington

“I can’t say if they are born Belizeans or not. I just know that they are Belizeans because they are registered voters in Freetown.”

“We are talking about Alex Chang?”

Orson ‘OJ’ Elrington

“Yes. Alex and Jason, his son. It was brought to my attention I believe last week that there were some moves to enforce, that the owners did make moves to enforce their legal rights but that was as far as I know about that situation.”
