Belmopan City Council’s Comes Under Fire over S.S.B. Contributions

The Belmopan City Council is under fire tonight for failing to pay social security contributions for one of its employees. In a letter dated May thirty-first, the Social Security Board tells the Belmopan City Council employee that the sickness benefit claim has been disallowed since the conditions were not satisfied.  For the employee to have received sickness benefits, fifty contributions would have had to be paid since the first day of work. On the day on which the incapacity occurs, not less than five contributions must have been paid in the period of thirteen weeks immediately preceding the date of incapacity. Well according to the letter, zero contributions have been made on behalf of the employee. A statement from Belmopan Mayor, Khalid Belisle, confirms that the city council had failed to stay current with social security contributions. According to Belisle, the Belmopan City Council had entered into an agreement with the Social Security Board for the payment of a sum of arrears which would have brought the council’s balance up to date by July. Mayor Belisle says that “any interpretation that would indicate that the Council had left any employee completely contributionless would be erroneous, as once the arrears situation was arrested, a stipulation of the payment agreement was the Council keeping up to date with future monthly payments until such time as the Council’s account was fully current.”  Fortunately for the employees, Belisle told News Five that the council has been able to bring their account fully up to date as of today.
